How to Increase Embedded Payments Adoption in Your Software Platform

2 min read

For software companies, launching embedded payments is the easy part. The revenue comes from adoption: the share of your customers who actually process payments through your platform, often called the attach rate. Many platforms launch payments, see early adoption from new customers, and then plateau well below what the opportunity supports.

Why attach rates stall

  • Payments is presented as optional rather than as part of how the product works.

  • Sales compensation doesn't reward selling payments, so it gets skipped.

  • Existing customers (the backbook) are never systematically asked to switch.

  • The merchant application and onboarding process creates friction or delays.

  • Customers worry about support quality if something goes wrong with their money.

Seven levers to raise adoption

  1. Make payments the default. Build payments into onboarding and core workflows so it's the natural choice, not an add-on customers must seek out.

  2. Align sales incentives. Give sellers clear compensation and training for payments so it becomes part of every deal.

  3. Work the backbook deliberately. Segment existing customers by volume and readiness, then run targeted outreach with a clear reason to switch.

  4. Remove onboarding friction. Shorten the application, pre-fill what you already know, and set clear expectations for approval and activation.

  5. Build payments-ready support. Train support on payments questions, define escalation paths, and make sure merchants trust they'll get help.

  6. Price with confidence. Make sure pricing is competitive and that customers understand the value of integrated payments, not just the rate.

  7. Measure by cohort. Track attach rate for new customers and backbook separately, along with activation time and processing volume, so you know which levers are working.

Where to start

Start by measuring where you are: attach rate for new customers versus existing ones, how long activation takes, and where applicants drop off. Those numbers usually point to the one or two levers that will move adoption fastest.
